Our philosophy

At the estate of SOHLER & Fils, we let time take its course.

So I could have just answered « my love for good wine », but in reality, the answer is far more profound. What defines passion is wonderment ! To let ourselves be wondered by nature, by the straight furrow of a plow turning over the soil, to enjoy the order and tidiness of a well pruned vine ; to admire buds appearing in the spring and to feel the sweet scent of blooming. Indeed, season after season, I let myself be amazed by this landscape that changes depending on the way we shape it. I love walking in the vines, cultivated for generations, I feel like I’m closer to the roots of my ancestors : this keeps on moving me so much ! In the cellar, I taste the new vintage, from every barrel, and I let it surprise me, feeling the aromatic beginning of the futur wine. I love welcoming people of all nationalities, from all walks of life, listening to them and, in return, teaching them wine making ; perceiving their reaction to the freshness of a Riesling or the floral bouquet of a Gewurztraminer… For all theses reasons, I am happy to be a winemaker.

Thus, as in art, good and beautiful originate from the inner world of the artist and transcend his work, seizing the audience. Furthermore, the wine of an artist winemaker penetrates the soul of the one who tastes it, through its quality and the history emanating from it. This is why, despite the importance of the terroir, the grape variety and the vintage, the added value's key element will always be the human factor.

Word of the Winemaker

At the estate of SOHLER & Fils, we let time take its course. We don’t make wine, we allow it to happen. In fact, most of our work, as wine makers, is done outside, among the vine humus, patiently and humbly. It’s outside that wine is made, and afterwards brings light inside.

One day, I was asked the following question : « What are you passionate about as a winemaker when the only values in this world are economic efficiency, and time & money saving ? ». At first glance, the answer may seem complicated as we pereceive all the restrictions related to the profession : vine and wine limitations, administrative burden, agronomic, legal and fiscal constraints… not to mention the weather, and the arduous work conditions, winter and summer alike.
